Cyathea excavata is a tree fern from the family Cyatheaceae. This species is endemic to Peninsular Malaysia and only found in Cameron Highlands and Fraser’s Hill. The species epithet excavata is derived from Latin, bearing the meaning ‘excavated’ which refers to the deeply excavated pneumathodes on the base of stipes. Its habitats include upper hill dipterocarp to lower montane forest, sometimes by rivers and in disturbed areas under direct sunlight between 970-1,530 m altitude (Parris et al., 2020).
The trunk of this tree fern can grow up to 3 m tall with lateral buds sometimes present, forming small crowns of fronds. The distinctive features of C. excavata are its large and deeply excavated pneumathodes and its smooth, almost scaleless green stipes (Parris et al., 2020).
