Description

Shorea faguetiana or known locally as Yellow Meranti or Damar Hitam Siput in Malay, is a large emergent tree that can grow up to 50 m, with 1.5 m diameter. The highest record of this tree is nearly 330 feet or 100 m, found in Sabah, which is the tallest tropical tree in the world (Daley, 2019).

The leaves have the texture of leather, and its colour is usually drying greyish-green. The bark is fawn-brown with a vertically cracked and thinly oblong flaky surface. The flower petal is cream colour (Ashton, 2004). The winged seeds will spin like a helicopter when falling to the ground.

The Yellow Meranti grows in mixed dipterocarp, lowland, and evergreen forest. It is distributed in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Brunei. It is classified as an Endangered species under the IUCN Red List due to the population reduction of more than 50% in the past three generations due to logging and habitat loss. This species is facing another danger where its habitat is replacing by the expansion of agriculture (Pooma et al., 2017). Therefore, monitoring work and planting work must be done to avoid the decline.
