Description

Commonly known as Meranti Laut, Shorea gratissima is a large tree of dipterocarp species that exceeding 95 cm in diameter. It can be found in lowland to hill forests at altitudes to 500 m, on hills near the coast. This species is widely distributed in Myanmar, Sumatra, Peninsular Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia, Singapore and Borneo (Chua et al., 2010; Yong et al., 2011). Due to the threatened by continued decline in habitat quality, Meranti Laut is categorized as Vulnerable in Malaysia (Yong et al., 2011).
