Description

Clarias anfractus is a type of freshwater catfishes endemic to Sabah, Malaysia. It has a relatively short, cylindriform body measuring around 17.6 cm SL. There are three characters that can differentiate this catfish from other species. First, it is the combination of a pectoral spine with an irregular outline. The second characters appear in the male genital, which is a pear-shaped genital papilla and the genital opening exposed at the tips. The third character is the relatively large white spots on the sides of the body. This catfish can be found in slow pools of forested fast-flowing streams with a substrate of mud and soil with a substantial amount of leaf debris. The genus Clarias derived from the Greek word, “chlaros”, meaning lively, which refer to the ability of the fish to live for a long time out of the water, while the species epithet derived Latin word, “anfractus”, meaning twisted or crooked, which refer to the pectoral spine’s shape (Ng, 1999).
