The given variable is not an array and contains a null value.
Symplocos pendula is a type of shrub or small tree that belongs to the family Symplocaceae. The leaves are measured 2.5-12.5 x 1-6 cm and drying brownish. The fruits are spindle-shaped, measured around 10-15 mm long. The conical style base of the fruits is visible within the surrounding enlarged calyx lobes. It is distributed in Asia and throughout Malesia except Java and the Lesser Sunda Islands.
The genus is derived from two Greek words, sym- meaning together, and plocos meaning connected, which refer to the stamens adnate to the corolla. The species epithet is derived from a Latin word, pendulus means hanging down, that is referring to the flower.
There are two varieties that are being recognised in Malaysia, which are S. p. var. hirtistylis and S. p. var. pendula, but the latter not being found in Sabah and Sarawak. S. p. var. hirtistylis is known by the Iban as legai. It can grow up to 24 m tall and up to 30 cm in diameter. The leaves are spirally arranged. It occurs in high kerangas and lower to upper montane forests, at 800-3,400 m altitude. The obvious difference between these two varieties is the flower part. The hypanthium and calyx are hairy in the former species, while the latter species has glabrous hypanthium and calyx. Meanwhile, S. p. var. pendula is a common species that occurs in montane forests at 1,200 m and above, sometimes along the stream banks (Nooteboom, 2010).
