Description

Microsorum scolopendria is a type of epiphytic fern that belongs to the family Polypodiaceae. It is known as Paku wangi in Malay. From the vernacular name, this fern has a fragrant smell because its fronds contain coumarin. The diameter of the rhizomes is measured around 8 mm. The fronds are simple or pinnatifid. The sori are separate, round or elongate, deeply sunken and visible as protrusions on the upper surface of the leaves. The species epithet is derived from the Greek word, which means millipede.

Paku wangi is distributed in the Old World tropics from Africa, Sri Lanka, Indo-China to S. China and throughout Malesia to Australia and the Pacific Island. It is commonly found growing in coastal forests or rocky coasts, oil palm trees, rain trees and on the ground, sometimes from limestone hills. The conservation status of this fern is Least Concern in Peninsular Malaysia (Hovenkamp, 2013).
