Description

The Chestnut-crowned Warbler, also known as Cekup Ubun Perang in Malay is a species of bird commonly found at the montane forest (Jeyarajasingam & Pearson, 2012). It is widely distributed in the Oriental region, ranging from the Himalayas and southern China throughout South-East Asia to Sumatra. This bird usually inhabits the middle storey and crowns of smaller trees solitarily and forming pairs when breeding. It nests under the overhang of steep banks where it often seen bringing nest material and food. When disturbed, this species will utter a low ‘dzee’ and constantly dart back and forth near the nest when intruder is present (Strange & Jeyarajasingam, 1993).

This warbler is recognizable by its small body, about 10 cm in size. An adult Chestnut-crowned warbler has a crown chestnut, grey head together with greyish breast and sides of head including yellow flanks and white eye-ring.  The mantle and wings are in greenish-yellow with distinctive yellow wing bars (Strange & Jeyarajasingam, 1993). Meanwhile, the juvenile has a similar appearance as the adult but with dull brownish-grey at the middle of the crown bordered with broad ashy grey stripes (Jeyarajasingam & Pearson, 2012).
