Abstract

The National Policy on Biological Diversity (NPBD) 2022-2030 will ensure that “Malaysia is committed to conserve its biological diversity, promote its sustainable use, and ensure fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from the utilisation of biological resources”.

As part of the respond towards the global biodiversity agenda, NPBD 2022-2030 is embodied with the spirit of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as well as aligned with the key elements of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF). The policy contains five overarching goals, which closely mirror the KMGBF, namely:

GOAL 1: We have empowered & harnessed the commitment of all stakeholders to conserve biodiversity;

GOAL 2: We have significantly reduced direct and indirect pressures on biodiversity;

GOAL 3: We have safeguarded all our key ecosystems, species and genetic diversity;

GOAL 4: We have ensured that the biodiversity is used safely and the benefits from its utilisation are shared equitably; and

GOAL 5: We have improved the capacity, knowledge & skills of all stakeholders to conserve biodiversity.
