Description

Nyctaginaceae is known as the Bougainvillea family and comprised 3 genera and 6 species in Peninsular Malaysia. One of the species in this family is Boerhavia diffusa. The genus name is named after a Dutch botanist called Hermann Boerhaave, while the species epithet is derived from the Latin word, meaning spreading widely, which is referring to the branches of the inflorescence. In Peninsular Malaysia, this species can be found in Kedah, Penang, Perak, Selangor, Terengganu, Pahang and Johor (Rafidah, 2017). In Borneo, this species is not present.

This species is a short-lived or perennial erect herb that can reach up to 20 m tall. The stem of this species is reddish. The lower leaves’ surface is pale green to whitish and sometimes with red marginal glands. The margin of the leaves is wavy and hairy along the leaf margin, forming a fringe. The inflorescences of this species are slender and hairy. The flower is campanulate and pinkish to purplish red colour. The fruit is a club-shaped anthorcarp with scattered glands on the ribs.
