Description

Castanopsis evansii is locally known as Buling and Kumpat in Dusun ethnic. This evergreen tree can grow up to 20 m tall and the bole can be around 30 cm in diameter. The greyish bark is smooth or sometimes flaky while the yellow inner bark is fibrous. The sapwood is a pale yellow colour. The glabrous (smooth) twigs are sparsely minute-lenticellate. It has linear and triangular stipules. The elliptic to lanceolate leaves are coriaceous (having the texture of leather) and glabrous on both surfaces. The male flowers are arranged in solitary or sometimes in clusters of 3 along the rachis while the female flowers are arranged in solitary along the rachis. The perianth lobes for male flowers are obtuse while the perianth lobes for female flowers are acute. There is only one ovoid and thin-walled seed in each obovoid to ellipsoid cupule (Soepadmo & Saw, 2000).

Castanopsis evansii can grow in primary and disturbed hill mixed dipterocarp forest up to 500 m altitude. This species is distributed in Borneo and Philippines. It is common throughout Sabah and rare in Sarawak (Soepadmo & Saw, 2000).
