Description

Chloranthus erectus is an erect shrub, which belong to the family Chloranthaceae. It is more commonly known as sambau paya in Malay. The leaves' surfaces are dark green and shining above, while beneath the leaves are dull and pale. The flowers are bisexual. The male part usually has three stamens, the apical part is 3-lobed, the central lobe is larger with a 2-locular anther, while the lateral lobes are smaller, each with a 1-locular anther. The ovary is ovoid-shaped, enclosed by the male part. The fruits are creamy white, obovoid in shape, measuring 3-4 mm long and 6-7 mm wide. However, some of the fruits may have dark violet-purple towards the apex. The seeds are yellowish-white.

The genus is derived from two Latin words, chloros meaning greenish, and anthus meaning flower. Meanwhile, the species epithet is derived from a Latin word, erectus meaning erect, which is referring to the inflorescences.

This shrub is distributed in the continental of Southeast Asia, from Nepal to China, south to the Andaman Islands, Myanmar, Indo-China, and throughout Malesia as far as New Guinea and New Ireland. It occurs mainly from lowland primary forest to lower montane forest, from 20-1,200 m altitude. The flowering season is throughout the year (Rafidah, 2010).
