Description

Drepananthus biovulatus is a tree that can grow up to 20 m tall. The genus name drepananthus is derived from the Greek words drepanos, means falcate or sickle-shaped, and anthos which denotes to flower. The combination of these two terms describing the sickle-shaped flower petals of this genus. Meanwhile, the biovulatus originates from two Latin terms, bi which means two and ovulates which means ovulate, and it refers to the condition of each carpel that contains two ovules. The twigs are glabrous and when dried turn dark with fine ridges along their length. The leaves blades can be either elliptic, oblong-elliptic or obavate with size measures from 5.5–14.0 cm long and 3.0–8.5 cm wide. The texture of the leaves are chartaceous to coriaceous and glabrous, with the exception of a few scattered pale hairs along the midrib when young. The dried leaves will turn dark to middle-brown, occasionally either with grey-brown on the surface or with a silvery wash, and the vein beneath will be darker than the surface. It may have a few greenish yellow of extremely scented flower cymes per inflorescence with flat and linear petal blades that are measuring around 30 mm long and 2–3 mm wide. This species contains approximately 15 ellipsoidal monocarps ranging in size with up to 2 cm long and 1 cm diameter, with each monocarp carries approximately 4 flattened seeds. This species is native to Borneo where it has been recorded to be found in peat swamps forests and kerangas forests in Sarawak, Brunei and Kalimantan (Turner et al., 2014).
