Description

Lithocarpus ferrugineus is one of the species in Fagaceae family. The species epithet ferrugineus is derived from the Latin word meaning “red-brown”, referring to the indumentum of the acorn. This tree can reach a height of 30 m and 50 cm bole diameter with buttresses up to 0.7 m tall. The greyish brown bark is scaly or smooth or lenticellate. The colour of its inner bark is brown or red and its sapwood is yellow. The coriaceous (leather-like texture) leaves are glabrous (smooth) on both surfaces. Male flowers, female flowers and cupules are arranged in solitary along the rachis. The perianth lobes of male flowers are obtuse while the perianth lobes of female flowers are acute. The cup- or saucer-shaped cupule encloses up to half of the ovoid acorn (Soepadmo & Saw, 2000).

Lithocarpus ferrugineus is usually found in Peninsular Malaysia and Borneo. This species is very common and widespread throughout Sabah and Sarawak. It inhabits primary hill mixed dipterocarp forest to lower montane forest, up to 1,200 m altitude, on sandy clay and yellow podsolic soils (Soepadmo & Saw, 2000).
