Description

Castanopsis foxworthyi is commonly known by the locals as berangan lingkau in Iban ethnic and berangan paya in Malay. This evergreen tree can reach a height of 30 m tall and the bole has around 60 cm in diameter. The smooth bark is blackish brown in colour while the inner bark is in pale red. The sapwood has yellowish white colour. The twigs are sparsely (thinly) stellate-pubescent (hairy), large lenticellate or sometimes finely fissured. The shape of the stipules is narrowly ovate to elliptic. Its elliptic to lanceolate leaves are thick-coriaceous and glabrous (smooth) on both surfaces. Both male and female flowers are arranged in clusters of 3 along the rachis with acute perianth lobes. There are 3 ovoid seeds with thin wall in each cupule (Soepadmo & Saw, 2000).

Castanopsis foxworthyi grows in the primary mixed dipterocarp, peat swamp and kerangas forests, to montane forest, up to 2100 m altitude. This species can be found in NE Sumatra, Peninsular Malaysia, Singapore and Borneo. It is very common and widely distributed in Sabah and Sarawak (Soepadmo & Saw, 2000).
