Description

Balanophora fungosa subsp. indica var. indica is a type of dioecious plant. The tubers are tawny brown, occurring singly or in a lumpy mass more-or-less branched to 25 cm across. The shape of the flowering tuber-branches is subspherical to broadly ellipsoid, measuring 0.5-5.5 cm long and up to 11.5 cm, with 1-3.5 cm wide. The scale leaves are dark crimson and spirally arranged, but it does not inflorescence at anthesis. The male flowers are actinomorphic and the shape of the tepals is elliptic-lanceolate while the female flowers occur on the main axis of inflorescences and on the cylindrical part of the spadicles. The largest female flower with an ovary is measured around 0.25-0.5 mm long.

Balanophora derived from two Greek words, balanos, meaning acorn and –phora, meaning bearing, which is referring to inflorescence. Meanwhile, the species epithet is derived from the Greek word, fungus which refers to the fungus-like appearance of the tuber.

This variety is widespread in Peninsular Malaysia. It occurs in lower and upper montane forests in deeply shaded, humus-rich place, from 600 m to above 1,200 m altitude. Compared to other places, the one that grows on Gunung Benom and Gunung Tahan has exceptionally long male inflorescences, which measured around 11-11.5cm (Kiew, 2010).
