Description

Gastrochilus hainanensis is an epiphytic and sympodial plant which flowering in December. This species can be found in Hainan and Thailand. This orchid species is new found in Peninsular Malaysia. In Perlis, it was recorded in Bukit Merah at an elevation of 100 to 200 m on tree trunk in shady place. The stem of this species is short and measures at about 3 cm long. This orchid species has five leaves which are fleshy, thick, obliquely elliptic, its midrib is very prominent at the back, apex unequally bilobed and tip rounded. The inflorescences of this species are short and arise from internodes of stem with four flowers. Its flowers are arranged around the rachis at about 1.4 across with pale yellow with dark red dots and greenish at the back. The lateral sepals of this species are obliquely obovate, narrow base, concave, its apex reflexed and tip blunt while its petals are lanceolate and tip blunt.

Sympodial   —   A specialized lateral growth pattern in which the apical meristem is terminated and growth is continued by one of more lateral meristems, which repeat the process.
