Description

Locally known as keruing ropol or keruing kerukup kecil, this species is a magnificent and large, emergent tree towering up to 55 m and growing to 2 m in diameter. Its distribution range includes Peninsular Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, Java, Lesser Sunda Islands, Borneo and the Philippines. This widely distributed tree inhabits areas of lowlands to hill forests near streams, on lower slopes of hills and moist valleys up to 600 m of altitudes. Previously, this species has been recorded from the lowlands to 600 m altitudes in Kedah, Selangor, Kelantan, Pahang and Johor while in Sabah, it was recorded to occur on lower slopes of mixed dipterocarp forests to 500 m altitudes. Back in the day, this species is an important source of oleo-resins. Due to habitat loss and fragmentation, this species faces a reduction in its population sizes and was assessed as Vulnerable for Malaysia (Chua et al., 2010; Yong et al., 2011).
