Description

A large emergent tree that grows to 95 cm diameter, Meranti Jerit is common name for Shorea henryana. It is distributed in Myanmar, Thailand, and Peninsular Malaysia (Kedah and Perlis). It inhabits seasonally dry tropical rain forests and prefers on granite, quartzite and deep limestone soils (Chua et al., 2010; Yong et al., 2011). S. henryana produces one of the hardest and heaviest meranti pa’ang timbers which are used in the construction of tongkang (Chinese sailing ship). It also produces clear or brownish dammar and is exported commercially from Langkawi (Symington, 2004). Due to habitat degradation in its areas of occupancy, this species is categorized as Endangered (Yong et al., 2011).
