Description

Alphonsea javanica is a plant species that belongs to the family Annonaceae. It can reach up to 30 m height and 35 cm in diameter. When the twigs are dry, they are reddish brown and wrinkled along their length. The leaves are elliptic to narrowly ovate or ovatelanceolate, with a blade size of 8.0−19.0 and 2.5−7.5 cm and have coriaceous texture, but occasionally chartaceous and glabrous. When the leaves dry, the tops of the leaves are grey or brown and looks smooth and shiny, on the other hand, the below is brown, usually with a darker midrib. This species consists of one to four yellow or greenish yellow flowers.  This species produces up to 7 monocarps, that are irregularly cylindrical or ellipsoidal shape with size up to 7 cm long and 3−4 cm wide. Each monocarp can hold approximately 6 seeds that are 13mm long, 10 mm diameter and 3 mm thick (Turner, 2014). It can be found all the way from Thailand to Borneo encompassing Sabah, Sarawak and Kalimantan, as well as the Philippines, Sulawesi and the Moluccas (Turner, 2018). This species can be found in lowland forests.
