Description

Alphonsea johorensis is a plant species that belongs to the family Annonaceae. It is known as Selukai or Semukau by Ibanese people (Forest Department Sarawak, 2019). This species can reach 27 m height and diameter of 30 cm. When dried, the twigs are black or dark grey with longitudinally wrinkled. The leaves are ovate or elliptic in shape, with blade size ranging from 5.5−13.5 and 2−5 cm, and have chartaceous and glabrous texture. The colour of the dried leaves is reddish brown or grey-brown on the upper surface, which looks smooth and shiny, and the below also has a similar shade. This species can have one to three flowers per inflorescences. It produces up to eight ellipsoidal monocarps with size up to 3.5 cm in length and 1.5 cm in diameter, where each monocarp may contain several seeds (Turner, 2014). It can be found all the way from Peninsular Malaysia, Singapore, Sumatra and Borneo specifically Sabah, Sarawak and Kalimantan (Turner, 2018). The epithet name, johorensis is taken from the location of the species’ discovery in 1936 at Sungai Kayu which is located in the state of Johor, Peninsular Malaysia. This species can be found in lowland to lower montane forests at altitudes up to 1,750 m (Turner et al., 2014).
