Drepananthus havilandii is a tree that can grow up to 25 m tall. The genus name drepananthus is derived from the Greek words drepanos means falcate or sickle-shaped, and anthos which denotes to flower. The combination of this two terms describing the sickle-shaped flower petals of this genus. Twigs are brown or grey in color, with smooth or ridges along their length. The twigs also have glabrous texture, but during young age it has scattered short hairs. The leaves blades are either elliptic, obovate or ovate-lanceolate with size ranging from 6–22 m long and 3–10 cm wide. The leaves have chartaceous to coriaceous and glabrous texture with a few young leaves possess scattered hairs along the underneath midrib. The dried leaves are brown or grey and typically with darker midrib than the blade. This species has fragrant flowers that appear at the woody branches (ramiflorous) or behind the leaves. The petals are cream or yellow in colour, with narrowly linear blades measuring from 3.5–4.5 mm long, approximately 2 mm wide for outer petals, and 1 mm wide for inner petals. The dried flowers are dark brown with scattered short pale adpressed hairs. It has 1–3 ellipsoidal to globose monocarps of size measuring approximately 4.5 cm long and 3.5 cm in diameter. When ripe, the monocarps are yellow and smooth, while when dried, its turn to pale brown with the presence of scurfy. Each monocarp contains approximately 10 flat, smooth and shiny brown seeds, measuring around 2 cm long and 1 cm wide. According to records from Turner et al. (2014), this species is native to Borneo, where it can be found in lowland and hill forests at altitude up to 1,100 m in Sabah, Sarawak, Brunei and Kalimantan, but is less frequently seen in heath forests.
