Description

Rhaetulus didieri is one of the most handsome beetles that can be found inhabits freshly felled or uprooted trees. It is measured around 60 to 65 mm in length. This beetle can be found above 750 m in heavily forested areas.

This species has mandibles bifurcated at the tips, toothed at the edge and of remarkable length. Both the head and protonum are black. The head is smaller than the prothorax which bears saw-like edges. The smooth sheath of the hardened elytra are chestnut at the posterior and black at their apexes. Tibiae of all legs are chestnut, whereas the rest of the body is black.

The larva is creamy white with a rather smooth fleshy body. Also, it has some short setae on the upper surface of the body. It feed on the rotting tree trunks of the genus Shorea and pupates after two and a half months deep in the core of rotting trunks (Tung, 1983).

Max size: 84 mm. http://www.coleoptera-atlas.com/lucanidae-scarabaeoidea/lucaninae/lucanini/rhaetulus/article/rhaetulus-didieri
