Leptobrachium abbotti is also known as lowland litter frog, belongs to the family Megophryidae. It has a stocky, broad head and bulging eyes. There is no webbing on the toes. It has a smooth skin. The dorsal parts of the body are dark brown to black, while the belly has bold black and white mottling. In general, the males are smaller than the females. Tadpoles can reach up to 90 mm, which is large in size. At hatching phase, the tadpoles are pale brown to straw-coloured. Eventually, they will darken into medium brown and black spots will be developed and appeared on the body and tail.
The juvenile and adult stages live within the dead leaves and litter on the floor of primary and old secondary growth forests. In contrast, the habitat for tadpoles is under the rocks at the bottom of pools in the centre or at the sides of streams. The diet for juvenile and adult includes large insects and other invertebrates. Meanwhile, the tadpole feed on dead and decaying vegetation.
It is known to be occurs in all part of Borneo which include Brunei, Indonesia and Malaysia. Mostly, it is a lowland species which is found below 1000 metres above sea level. Deforestation is the main threat making the population for this species decline.
