Hemigalus derbyanus or the banded civet can grow up to 56 cm in body length, 37.5 cm in tail length and weigh between 1 to 3 kg. Generally, the body colour ranged from pale buff to golden-brown and paler underneath. Banded civet is so-called because of the dark brown or black bars across its back, and dark longitudinal stripes on the neck and face while its tail is banded only at the base and the rest is mostly dark brown. It also has strongly curved claws that can retract like cats.
Banded civet is a nocturnal animal. It travels and feeds mainly on the ground and more than 90% of its diet was insects, but it also eats fruits and small animals.
The range of distribution for banded civet is in the Southeast Asia, which includes Myanmar, Peninsular Malaysia, Thailand, Sumatra and Borneo and is mostly restricted to lowland forest. The major threats to this species are habitat loss and hunting.
