Description

Amathusia phidippus or commonly known as Palm King is the most widespread species for genus Amathusia, distributed from Burma and Indo-china to the Philippines and Sulawesi. It can be found wherever the coconut palm grows. It is also inhabit oil palm plantations, villages and lowland forests (Kirton, 2014).

The Palm King has pale brown underside with whitish transverse streaks, the typical dark brown band and two widely separated eyespots. Its upperside is brown with orange-brown forewing apical borders. The female has similar appearance to the male but paler with yellower and more contrasted markings (Kirton, 2014). This butterfly camouflages on the trunks or brown leaves and stems to protect itself from predators. It does not fly far but quickly settling down on another perch (Corbet & Pendelbury, 1978).
