Taphozous melanopogon is a medium-sized bat with a forearm length of 63 to 68 mm. T. melanopogon is one of the insectivorous bats in the suborder Microchiroptera. It is known as black-bearded tomb bat because the blackish beard will appear when it approaches the age of about 5 to 6 months. The dorsal fur is russet brown to nearly blackish, while the ventral fur is grey or paler. Its wingspan can grow to around 40 cm. Commonly, this species produces low intensity and low frequency of echolocation calls.
This species occurs in protected areas, yet, it can be found in secondary habitats and human-dominated areas. Due to its widespread capacity in South Asia, southern China and Southeast Asia, it is listed as least concern in the IUCN Red List. However, the major threat to this species is the habitat loss.
