Description
Aegithina viridissima or commonly known as Green Iora is a species of bird in the Aegithinidae family measuring about 14 cm in length (Jeyarajasingam & Pearson, 2012). This species occurs in subtropical moist lowland forests and subtropical or tropical mangrove forests. It can be found in Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore and Thailand. It feeds on insects from the foliage and branches.
The male of Green Iora has mainly green plumage, black tail and split yellow eye ring while the female has greenish yellow underparts, less distinct eye ring, yellow wing bar with plain and straight lower wing bar. Its appearance is close resemblance to the common iora, A. tiphia. They can be distinguished by the pale green underparts with a yellow vent and the split yellow eye ring on A. viridissima. Due to habitat loss, this species is categorized as Near Threatened by the IUCN Red List (BirdLife International, 2016).
