Description
Aegypius monachus, also known as Black Vulture is one of the largest flying birds in the world and among birds of prey (Barbeiro, 2014). Its length can measure about 100-110 cm. Both sexes have a broad head and bodies covered with black or brown feathers, a black beak and brown eyes but the females are normally heavier and slightly larger than males. While the juvenile plumage is browner, and its head is more blackish than adults (Jeyarajasingam & Pearson, 2012). In their natural habitat, they feed on carcasses but actually, their main food sources are dead rabbits, sheep, and ungulates. Unlike other birds, this species do not migrate and it lives in nests throughout the year. The Black Vulture breeds from southern Europe through the Middle-East and southern temperate Asia and winters in south to Africa and South Asia with stragglers reaching South-East Asia (Jeyarajasingam & Pearson, 2012).
