Description

Commonly known as Red-throated Sunbird or Kelicap pinang in Malay, Anthreptes rhodolaemus is a species of bird in the Nectariniidae (Sunbirds) family. Its body measures around 13 cm in length. This bird is endemic throughout Sundaland where it can be found in Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar and Thailand. In Peninsular Malaysia, this species is a common resident of lowland rainforest up to 400 m above sea level (Strange & Jeyarajasingam, 1993; Jeyarajasingam & Pearson, 2012). It can also be seen in primary forest and forest edge throughout Borneo (Phillips, 2014).

The male Red-throated Sunbird has a very attractive and colourful plumage compared with female. It is easily identified by the brick-red throat together with dark maroon sides of heads and upper wing coverts. It also has an iridescent purple shoulder patch and dull yellowish underparts. The female can be differentiated to the male by the dull yellowish-olive underparts with denser yellowish tinge down the centre (Strange & Jeyarajasingam, 1993; Jeyarajasingam & Pearson, 2012). This sunbird has been listed as Near Threatened by the IUCN Red List due to extensive loss of habitat (BirdLife International, 2016).
