Description
The Spectacled Spiderhunter or scientifically known as Arachnothera flavigaster is a bird species belongs to the family Nectariniidae. It is widely distributed throughout the Sundaland ranging from Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra and Borneo. In Peninsular Malaysia, this bird is known to inhabit the primary and secondary lowland rainforest. It can also be seen in plantations (Strange & Jeyarajasingam, 1993; Jeyarajasingam & Pearson, 2012; Phillips, 2014).
This species can be distinguished from other spiderhunters by its large-sized body and thick yellow eye-ring (Strange & Jeyarajasingam, 1993). It often confused with the Yellow-eared Spiderhunter due to the similar yellow patches on the cheek. However, Spectacled Spiderhunter has a complete yellow eye-ring compare to the Yellow-eared Spiderhunter which do not have the bottom section of the eye ring (Phillips, 2014).
