Ardea cinerea or Grey Heron is a predatory wading bird feeding on fish, amphibians, small mammals and insects taken in shallow water with its long bill. This species will stand motionless waiting for its prey to come within striking distance and catch its prey by quickly straightening its neck and strike with its bill. The Grey Heron is a large bird with long, brown legs standing up to 1 meter tall and has a powerful pinkish-yellow beak which is long and straight. While in flight, they are slow with their neck folded back in S-shape. They have a white head with a broad black stripe that extends from the eye to the black crest and white neck with bluish-black streaks on the front of the neck. The plumage of this bird is largely ashy-grey and greyish-white below with some black on the flanks. The juveniles of this species appear generally duller with grey head and neck with small, dark grey crest. The Grey Heron can be seen around coastal wetland habitats such as lakes, rivers, ponds, marshes and sea coasts but also frequents in tidal estuaries and mangrove mudflats (Strange & Jeyarajasingam, 1993).
