Description
The Chinese Pond Heron or scientifically known as Ardeola bacchus is a small white bird with yellow eyes and a yellow bill with dark tip. It has golden brown to buff streaks on its head, olive-brown back, streaked white, brown and golden buff on its neck and throat, white wings and yellow legs. However, during its breeding season, the Chinese Pond Heron has red, chestnut head and neck, dark slate with a purple-bronze cast on its back, white throat and rufous upper breasts, white wings and belly, and pink-red legs. This species can be found in rice fields and other shallow aquatic habitats including marshes, swamps, riverbanks, mangroves and streams. The Chinese Pond Heron feeds on aquatic and terrestrial insects, molluscs, worms, fish, frogs and even small birds.
