Description

Ardeola speciosa or commonly known as Javan Pond Heron is a small wading bird from the heron family usually found in habitats such as paddy fields, flooded grasslands, marshes, ponds, lakesides and river banks, sometimes also mangroves, reefs and coastal flats. This species has different plumage during non-breeding and breeding season. During its non-breeding season, the Javan Pond Heron has a streaked olive-brown and buff head, streaked brown neck, pale olive-brown back and upper parts with streaked brown breast and white underparts. They also have white wings and tail. The juveniles are streaky brown appearing like the non-breeding adult. During breeding season, the Javan Pond Heron has pale golden yellow head, crest and neck, rufous to cinnamon lower neck and breast, with white underparts slightly tinged with orange, slate black back and when standing, its white wings is covered by the black back skirt. This species diet consists of insects, fish and crabs.
