Description
Argusianus argus is large-sized bird with measurements around 75–200 cm long, in which 140 cm is the tail length for an adult male (Strange & Jeyarajasingam, 1993). It’s commonly known as Great argus pheasant or Kuang Raya in Malay. This species is endemic to Sunda land including Peninsular Malaysia and commonly inhabits secondary lowland forest up to lower montane forest.
Generally, adult male of Great argus pheasant is covered by rusty-brown plumage with the eyespots on the secondary wing feathers and reddish-brown upper breast. The female pheasant appears to be quite similar to the male, but with shorter tail and no secondary wing feathers. This bird produces loud double call sound ‘kuau-wau’. During courtship, males will perform nuptial displays by spreading their wings and pointing tail upwards to attract females.
