Description
Artamus leucorynchus is a medium-sized, short-tailed and large-headed bird with a top-heavy appearance. This bird is commonly known as the White-breasted Woodswallow. Both sexes are similar in appearance. They have charcoal-grey upperparts, tail and wings, a bluish bill with black tipped, dark brown eye and whitish-cream underparts and underwings providing a stark contrast to its dark colouration. The juveniles are similar in pattern to the adults but are darker brown in colour. The coverts, flight feathers and tail are narrowly tipped and fringed in buff-white, its breast feathers and underparts are off-white and its bill and legs are brown-beige.
The white-breasted woodswallow is found in eucalypt forests and woodlands, usually close to water, and in mangroves. It feeds on insects, catching them on the wing. It also forages on the ground or in the canopy. Like other woodswallows, this species has a divided, brush-tipped tongue that can be used to feed on nectar from flowers.
