Description
Painted Terrapin, also known as Tuntung Laut in Malay is a freshwater turtle in the family Geoemydidae. It has five claws on the front feet. During breeding season, both sexes exhibit a change in colour but the change colouration in males are more drastic. The males develop brilliant-white heads with a black-edged red forehead and black lips, while the pale olive-grey shell shows three longitudinal black lines and marginal spots. The head of females is grey colour (Das, 2010). The juvenile of Painted Terrapin is inhabits in freshwater areas of rivers while the adults in estuarine mangrove areas (IUCN, 2000). This species feeds on fruits, leaves and clams. Females are larger than males. They migrate to upriver sandbanks or marine beaches to lay one to three clutches of 15-25 eggs.
