Taxonomy

The taxonomic status is pending for approval

Description

A large emergent tree, known locally as Keruing Gondol is widely distributed in the Andamans, Myanmar, Peninsular Thailand, Sumatra, Peninsular Malaysia, Borneo (Sabah) and the Philippines. It is recorded from low hills in mixed dipterocarp forests near the coast at altitudes to 400 m in Sabah (Chua et al., 2010; Yong et al., 2011). It produces keruing timber and is tapped for its oleo-resins (Yong et al., 2011). The term 'Gondol' meaning bald describes the globose and shining calyx tube of the fruit. While the resins (minyak keruing) is used by Orang Asli for caulking boat, making torches and wood coating (Burkill, 1935; Gianno,1986). Furthermore, it is used commercially as a fixative in perfumes and cosmetic products (Gianno, 1986). Due to habitat loss, this species is categorized as Vulnerable.
