Description
A medium-sized harrier, Circus melanoleucos or commonly known as the pied harrier measures about 45 cm in length. Its diet varies greatly depending on the seasons, regions and individuals. A list of prey includes small mammals, frogs, large insects such as grasshoppers and beetles, small chicks, lizards, small birds, snakes and fishes. Sometimes, carrion is also included.
The male pied harrier has a black head, nape, back and scapulars. Under the chin, the throat and breast are also black. It has yellow eyes and its feet are yellow to orange-yellow. Its white rump is finely barred with grey while the abdomen and thighs are uniformly white with the rest of the wings and tail are pale silver-grey. The female pied harrier is slightly larger than the male and has a dark brown crown and nape, with paler streaks. Its underparts are white with a rufous wash, streaked with dark reddish brown. The thighs and under-tail coverts are almost unstreaked. Its eyes are brown and its feet yellow.
