Description

Copsychus saularis, commonly known as Magpie Robin or Murai Kampung in Malay (Asyraf et al., 2015) is a small passerine and popular cage bird in the Muscicapidae (Old World Flycatchers) family. This species lives in villages, plantations, gardens and parks throughout Peninsular Malaysia including offshore islands. A few subspecies have been recognized across the range, including Copsychus saularis adamsi from Sabah and Copsychus saularis musicus from Sarawak (Phillipps, 2014). This Magpie Robin is a common resident in the Oriental region ranging from the Indian subcontinent and southern China through South-East Asia to Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore. It usually seen solitarily or in pairs foraging for insects found on the ground, hopping from one place to another (Strange & Jeyarajasingam, 1993; Jeyarajasingam & Pearson, 2012).

In general, the male Magpie Robin can be identified by the glossy black head, breast and upperparts with white underparts and long white bars on wing including black tail with white outer tail feathers. The female has a similar appearance as the male but with dark grey replacing the black breast and upperparts. Meanwhile, the juvenile species are described to have the same plumage as the female but with brownish mottling on breast (Jeyarajasingam & Pearson, 2012).
