Description
Cuculus micropterus or commonly known as the Indian cuckoo belongs to the Cuculidae family. It is a solitary and shy bird, found in forests and open woodland at up to 3,600 m. Like other cuckoos, it feeds mainly on hairy caterpillars and a variety of insects including butterflies, grasshoppers, ants, and also fruits.
This species is a large cuckoo measuring about 33 cm in length. The adult of Indian cuckoo has greyish brown upperparts including its tail with a paler grey throat and upper breast (Strange & Jeyarajasingam, 1993). The underparts are white with dark barring and the tail is edged with prominent white spots. Both males and females are look alike, but the juveniles are browner and have broad white tips to the head and wing feathers.
The Indian cuckoo is a brood parasite. It lays its single egg mostly in the nests of drongos and crows. It removes and eats the egg from the host's nest before laying its own.
