Description
The largest of the drongo species, Dicrurus paradiseus or commonly known as Greater Racquet-tailed Drongo has a glossy blue-black body with metallic sheen and short crest on its forehead. This bird can easily be identified by the two long tail rackets and the crest of curled feather that begin in front of the face above the beak and along the crown to varying extents according to the subspecies. Its body size can reach up to 32 cm in length with elongated outer tail feathers shafts and racquets about 30 cm more (Strange & Jeyarajasingam, 1993; Jeyarajasingam & Pearson, 2012).
The Greater racquet-tailed drongo is widely distributed throughout the Oriental region which ranges from the Indian subcontinent and Southern China through South-East Asia to the Greater Sundas. In Peninsular Malaysia, this bird is known to inhabit the lowland rainforest up to the 820 m above sea level (Strange & Jeyarajasingam, 1993; Jeyarajasingam & Pearson, 2012). Like other drongos, this species feeds mainly on insects but also consume fruits and visits flowering trees for nectar.
