Description
Locally called Bangau Cina or Belekok Cina in Malay, Chinese Egret (Egretta eulophotes) is a seabird species belong to the Ardeidae (Herons) family. This species mainly breeds in Korea and certain parts of China and migrating to South-East Asia, Sumatra, Borneo, Sulawesi and the Philippines during winter. It is known to inhabit shallow mudflats near estuaries either solitarily or in small flocks catching fish in shallow water along the water’s edge (Strange & Jeyarajasingam, 1993; Jeyarajasingam & Pearson, 2012).
The Chinese Egret has an average size around 69–70 cm in length where a breeding adult has blue lores, orange-yellow bill and white nuchal crest. It also has long plumes on the neck, breast and back as well as black legs with yellow feet (Strange & Jeyarajasingam, 1993; Jeyarajasingam & Pearson, 2012). Meanwhile, the non-breeding adult has lacks nuchal crest and plumes. Also, it has greenish grey lores, dark maxilla and pinkish mandible on bill (Jeyarajasingam & Pearson, 2012).
This species has been categorized as Vulnerable in the IUCN Red List due to the reclamation of mudflats, estuarine habitats and offshore breeding islands for industry, infrastructure development and aquaculture (BirdLife International, 2016).
