Description
Egretta garzetta or commonly known as Little Egret is a striking and elegant member of the heron family. Differs from other egrets, this species has small size and slender build body (Strange & Jeyarajasingam, 1993). It can also be identified by its pure white feathers with a very thin, sharp-pointed black bill, sinuous neck and long, black legs. The Little Egret inhabits shallow, fresh, brackish and saline water bodies such as ponds, lakes, marshes and others. It feeds mainly during the day whilst walking through shallow, open water, hunting and stabbing its prey with its long bill. Its diet primarily consists of small fishes but also includes bivalves, crustaceans, and other invertebrates.
During breeding season, the breeding adults develop two long, slender nape plumes and a beautiful gauzy plumage around the breast and back while the bare skin between the bill and eyes becomes red or blue. While during the non-breeding season, the Little Egret virtually appears with a black bill and black legs with yellow toes. The juveniles are similar in appearance to the non-breeding adults but have less striking colouration on the feet and around the eyes.
