Eurystomus orientalis or the Oriental Dollarbird is a widespread member of the roller family (Coraciidae). This species feeds on large insects, such as cicadas and small reptiles that they catch in flight or take from the ground.
The Oriental Dollarbird is uniformly black upperparts but in sunlight a bluish-green sheen in plumage is visible (Strange and Jeyarajasingam, 1993). Its flight feathers of the wings and tail are dark blue. While in flight, the white patches towards the tips of its wings can be clearly seen. It also has a short and wide orange-red bill with black tip, light coloured belly and under tail coverts and glossy bright blue colouring on its throat and undertail.
Females are very similar to males but slightly duller. The juveniles are much duller than the adults and do not have the blue colouring on their throats in comparison. They also have brown bills and feet instead of red in the adults.
