Description
Falco tinnunculus or commonly known as the Eurasian Kestrel is among the smallest of all raptors. It is also the most common diurnal bird of prey and is often seen hovering over farmland and at the sides of motorways. Its long tail and narrow wings make it easier to distinguish from other species. It feeds largely on small mammals, rodents and small birds such as the house sparrows.
In terms of appearances, their plumage is mainly light chestnut brown. The back is usually a darker colour than the breast and both back and breast are covered in dark brown or blackish spots. Both sexes of the species are different with the females being noticeably larger than the males. In males, the rump and tail are bluish grey and unbarred, whereas in females they are brownish-red with dark barring. The males also have grey head and brown in females. The juveniles are similar to the females but are usually more yellowish-brown.
