Description
A small passerine bird measuring about 13 cm in length, Ficedula mugimaki is commonly known as Mugimaki flycatcher. It belongs to the Muscicapidae family. This species inhabits forests and woodland, mostly at higher elevations.
The Mugimaki flycatcher typically feeds on flying insects high in the tree canopy. The adult male has blackish blue upperparts with a short white supercilium behind the eyes, a white wing-patch, white edges to the tertials and white at the base of the outer tail-feathers. The breast and throat are orange-red while the belly and under tail coverts are white. The female is grey-brown above with a pale orange-brown breast and throat. It lacks white colour in the tail and has one or two pale wing bars rather than a white wing-patch. It also has a supercilium that is either faint or absent entirely. The young males are similar to the female but have a brighter orange breast, white in the tail and a more obvious supercilium.
