Description
Measured at around 78 cm in body length, the Lesser Frigatebird is the smallest frigatebird species in the Fregatidae family. Generally, this slightly build seabird has a long wing, black plumage and deeply fork tail. For comparison between the gender, the male is almost entirely black with a red throat and a white patch under the base of the wings, while the female has a white shade on breast and belly, and larger in size(Strange & Jeyarajasingam, 1993).
This Lesser Frigatebird is known to inhabit the open sea and keeping away from land except during breeding season. This species can be seen roosting together with Christmas Island Frigatebird (Fregata andrewsi) on Pulau Rengis near Tioman Island (Strange & Jeyarajasingam, 1993; Jeyarajasingam & Pearson, 2012).
