Description
Locally called Berkek bintik in Malay (Akashah et al., 2012), the Pintail Snipe is a waterbird species in the Scolopacidae (Sandpipers) family that breed in Europe to China and migrating to Africa, South-East Asia and Australia during winter (Jeyarajasingam & Pearson, 2012; Phillipps, 2014). It lives either solitarily or in small groups inhabiting flooded ricefields, wet grassland and margins of open freshwater swamp (Jeyarajasingam & Pearson, 2012).
The appearance of the Pintail Snipe is difficult to differentiate among three Gallinago snipe wintering in Malaysia. In general, all three Gallinago sp. have brown upperparts with black and white fine streaks, pale buff supercilium including whitish underparts with blackish-brown bars on flanks as well as eyeline and line below eyes. While, the Pintail Snipe can be identified by stocky build body measuring around 25 cm in length. It also has a dark tip on the long brown bill, where the bill is much shorter than Swinhoe’s (Gallinago megala) and Common Snipe (Gallinago gallinago) (Jeyarajasingam & Pearson, 2012).
