Description

The Common Moorhen, also known as Eurasian Moorhen or Pangling Kecil in Malay is a waterbird species widely distributed across Africa, Europe through Asia except for Australia and New Zealand (Strange & Jeyarajasingam, 1993). This species is known to inhabit the unused mining pools, flooded ricefields including overgrown drain and ditches. It is usually seen in small groups, paddling on water surface vegetation.

Measuring around 33 cm in length, the adult Common Moorhen possesses a blackish plumage with white bar along flanks and sides of undertail coverts together with distinct frontal shield behind the red yellow-tipped bill. Two white large oval patches on undertail coverts can be seen when the tail is cocked up. Meanwhile, the juvenile has brownish plumage instead of black with indistinct white line along flanks (Strange & Jeyarajasingam, 1993; Jeyarajasingam & Pearson, 2012).
