The Chestnut-capped Laughingthrush, Ianthocincla mitrata is one of the most abundant laughingthrush species found in lower montane rainforest of Peninsular Malaysia. This species is widely distributed and endemic to Sundaland region, mainly found in Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand. It is often seen in the thick cover area where it moves in small groups to feed while uttering a harsh rasping note whistle of ‘kwo-kwee-kwo-kwee’ to maintain contacts. This bird rarely in long flights, but prefers to hop from branch to branch and glide from one foliage to another (Strange & Jeyarajasingam, 1993; Jeyarajasingam & Pearson, 2012).
The Chestnut-capped Laughingthrush can be identified by the bluish-grey plumage, distinctive chestnut-brown crown, white eye-ring, bright-orange bill and finely white streaks on its forehead. Both sexes are look similar while the juvenile is duller and browner above (Myers, 2016).
